Runaway’s Holiday Weekend — Open July 3, 4 & 5

Runaway will be open regular hours (11 am to 7 pm) on Friday, July 3 (and Runaway to Play will take place as usual).

On Saturday, July 4, Runaway will open at 11 am but close early at 4 pm.

And on Sunday, July 5, Runaway will be open our regular Sunday hours (11 am to 5 pm).

Enjoy your holiday, stay safe. And come on in to check things out (or if you just want to enjoy the store air conditioning!).

You won’t believe our July class schedule

The class schedule for July is jam-packed. Edgar Allan Crow wants everyone to know that Runaway is lucky to have both wonderful teachers and fabulous customers — that’s what makes the place work as well as it does! That and the presence of a very stylish bird “hovering” over everything in the place.

We have even more Art Impressions® classes from Peggy Joyce. We have cartooning classes from Kelsey Hinton, and of course we have Deb Hook’s card classes using Great Impressions® and Whipper Snapper®.

Teresa Case is teaching Technique Tuesday® stamps and Christy Wood is taking over the Technique Tuesday® Die Fun Shop.

Tracy Ragland is bringing her “upcycling” skills to bear, and Joan Wiens has a couple of new offerings — Medieval Borders and a class using Inktense® pencils. Kitty Miller is collaging your animals. Well, we think she’s using pictures. Not the animals themselves. Never can be certain.

Let’s see . . . what else? Oh, that’s right. Christy Wood has a couple of offerings to supplement her “regular” classes as well.

Remember, you can get a printed class calendar for the next month or two anytime at Runaway. And you can look at upcoming event descriptions (“Events” from the home page) here on the website (when Edgar gets them done — not all birds are as reliable as we’d like). And you can always check the “official” Runaway calendar (not always as much detail and no photos, but if it’s scheduled it’s on that calendar) by choosing “Event Calendar” from the home page (that’s the only way to see that complete version — the other calendars include only the events that have been separately entered).

Cardmaking, mixed media, altered arts, journaling, drawing and much, much more! And that’s just in the month of July!

“Stamp Out Cancer!” Crafting Marathon June 6 and 7

Once again this year, Edgar Allan Crow and the rest of the Runaway gang invite you to join them to “Stamp Out Cancer!” on June 6 and 7.

This crafting marathon will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Come join us from 10 am until midnight on Saturday, June 6 and from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, June 7. Tickets are just $35 per day or $60 for the entire weekend — with all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society.

Bring your projects and play the night and day away with other crazy crafters! Make & Takes! Door prizes!

Table space is limited, so reserve your spot soon!

Runaway has tickets for Heirloom’s May 2015 Rubber Stamp & Paper Arts Festival

Heirloom Productions will be holding the Portland Rubber Stamp & Paper Arts Festival Saturday, May 9, 2015 at a new location — the Washington County Fair Complex, 873 NE 34th Avenue, Hillsboro, OR 97124.

The fairgrounds offer free parking, light rail access, and are conveniently located 16 miles west of Downtown Portland off Hwy 26.

You can minimize delays at the show by buying your presale tickets for $6 at Runaway.

The Heirloom website for the show can be found at http://www.heirloompro.com/shows2010/shows-Portland-05-09-2015.html and directions can be found at http://www.faircomplex.com/general/directions.html

Spring has sprung!

Thank goodness the west coast dock labor dispute has come to an end — we have plenty of new products coming into the store every week. The first new Ranger Dylusions paints have come (and gone — but we’ll have more in a few weeks). We have marvelous new Spring and Summer papers and a variety of new stamps in the store. If you haven’t checked us out for a while, now would be a wonderful time. You don’t know what you’re missing.

Runaway Joins the 2015 Northwest Paper Chase — March 13-29

The Paper Chase is a very cool event that brings together mixed media and paper crafters and stores from throughout Oregon and Washington. Runaway is very excited to be one of the 2015 participants! And we hope all our Runaway friends will make us your home store as you explore the broader Northwest paper-crafting scene.

The way it works is that you “run away” to your local participating store (subtle hint, there) and pick up your passport for just $10. You then travel the region to collect pages to create your own mini album to showcase the many destinations you visited.

The theme for the 2015 Northwest Paper Chase is games.  And each participating store offers its own unique take on the theme. Here at Runaway our theme is “Chess” — turns out Edgar Allan Crow loves the game, and who can argue with our mascot!

Each participant receives a passport booklet, a charm bracelet, and your first charm from Northwest Paper Chase (we are assured that this is a “must have” — and there is no other way to get it). You also receive a 20% discount on regular price purchases at each of the participating stores during the event. And, while you’re there, you can participate in each store’s promotional event (based on the individual store theme) — which will include a make-and-take (free with a purchase of $10 — after discounts have been applied and before any tax) and a charm (free with a purchase of $20 — again, post-discount and pre-tax– Runaway’s is custom made and not available anywhere else).

You can get more information at Runaway, in addition to your passport. And you can check out the Northwest Paper Chase website at www.northwestpaperchase.com.

Introduction to Art Journaling

Time: 9 am – noon

Cost: $65

Have you been curious about art journaling, but are not sure where to start? Come and play with me! We’ll explore what art journaling is and I will teach you a few techniques for creating fun and expressive pages. We’ll create backgrounds, image layers, and top texture. We’ll make several pages and you’ll get a feel for playing, experimenting, and being free with your art.  I’ll also give you some tips for page topics and writing on your pages. No previous art experience is required.

Art Journal Play Series: Beyond the Ink Pad

Time: 1 – 4 pm

Cost: $65

“Art Journal Play” classes are all about exploring and playing with art journaling techniques. The goal is to learn techniques, experiment, play, and make finished journal pages. We’ll be working in journals, but the techniques apply to all mixed-media projects (canvases, book-making, etc.).

In this class, we’ll explore one of our favorite addictions, rubber stamps. But we are going to go beyond the ink pad and use stamps with Pan Pastels, acrylic paints, crayons, gelatos, and more. I will show you techniques for creating and then we will build finished pages on top of our stamping–that means we’ll consider color, composition and layers as we finish our work.

Chunky Technique Book

Time: 10 am – 5 pm (includes one hour for lunch)

Cost: $120

Join me for a day of technique fun! We will make eight mixed-media backgrounds and play with a slew of products and materials. Paint? Yep. Ink? Of course. Modeling Paste? Naturally. We’ll especially focus on stencils: many ways to use and abuse them. At the end of the day, we’ll bind the backgrounds into a chunky journal. Get ready to get messy!

Art Journal Play Series: Words of Advice, a Collage Adventure

Time: 9 am – noon

Cost: $65

Do you need to give someone advice? Maybe you need to give yourself advice? Come and make collaged pages that focus on stamped advice that is personal and powerful. I will help demystify collage for you as we build pages with paint, ink, and simple motifs. We’ll add advice to create meaningful pages that are well-composed. We’ll play and create and let the advice sing.

Art Journal Play Series: Creature Feature

Time: 1 – 4 pm

Cost: $65

Ah, little creatures. You can call them spirit animals, good luck charms, treasured companions, or even just a peek into Mother Nature’s goodness. Let’s spend a day creating creatures for our art work. Birds, dogs, foxes, anything goes!  I’ll show you various art techniques for getting creatures into your work. We’ll be stamping with PanPastels and Gelatos, and even drawing and collaging, with lots of scribbles and artsy lines. We’ll celebrate our creatures with bright colors and marks.

Ranger Ink Designer Dyan Reaveley Coming to Runaway

If you’ve been sensing extra excitement at the intersection of Commercial and Chemeketa streets in downtown Salem, it’s because we have recently learned that Ranger Designer Dyan Reaveley is coming from Jolly Old England to spend a full weekend here! Yes, at our store November 22-23!

Both Christy and Angie have been lucky enough to take classes from Dyan, and we are excited to share the opportunity with all the Runaway family!

Come join Dyan for as much as two whole days, and plan to play hard!

Here’s the schedule:

Saturday, November 22:

9:00 to 11:30   Technique Tag Book ($45, all materials included)

12:30 to 3:30   Tags of Imagery ($55, all materials included)

4:30 to 7:30     Inky Watercolor Book ($55, all materials included)

Sunday, November 23:

9:00 to 5:00      Art Journaling Extravaganza — and we really mean “extravaganza”! ($140, all materials — including a Dylusions Art Journal — included).

Check the events pages for more info, give us a call at 503-881-6270 or stop by the store. You will not want to miss this event with an internationally recognized craft designer and artist from Ranger Ink.

Now — for the nuts and bolts about making this happen: Because of the level of interest — and because even Runaway’s large classroom space isn’t unlimited, prepayment is required. And we will not be able to offer refunds after Friday, November 14. Finally, because of the way our credit card fees are structured, we will need to keep $6 to cover costs when refunding any credit/debit card payments made over the telephone (we will not charge any additional fees for telephone debit/credit transactions unless a refund is needed).
